The OG Spotlight
Welcome to the OG Spotlight, a segment where I highlight some of the dopest independent artist I've had the pleasure of coming across whether out in public events or through casual streaming. Let's get into the first artist I am showcasing, rapper Bre $tyle from Atlanta, GA.
Inspired by artist like J. Cole and Missy Elliot, Bre $tyle is an upcoming rapper creating a lane of her own with party-friendly love anthems. Mainstream music often pushes songs about drugs, sex, or scamming; leaving audiences who can't relate to that lifestyle, searching for something fresh and real to connect to. Bre $tyle's RnBre is where that search ends and luckily, she just released an carefully crafted album she executively produced.
First Impression: Resilience and Authenticity
RnBre opens with Bre $tyle talking about her journey in striving for success in the music business. She differentiates herself through work ethic and rapping her truth without creating a fake persona; making this project relatable in contrast to artists who write around a lifestyle, their audience and sometimes they themselves, can't relate to. She also mentions the obstacles that come with the success she has already achieved on her journey, such as close-range envy. Such experiences can alter one's mentality and behaviors creating a "good girl gone bad", but what is special here is that $tyle acknowledges trying not to be changed by these external conflicts.
She switches from addressing the things sent to tear her down, to focus on the things that build her up. You can hear on the project that $tyle is self-motivated but also values support from her team, something that she plans in the future to return to them tenfold as she continues to elevate. Her boss mentality transfers through the speakers with vibrant flavor, as tracks like "It Girl" make you want to shake it while throwing your own money in the air.
Music with a Message: Where's the love?
On the album, $tyle also makes it her mission to get listeners to take a chance on real love again, nothing materialistic; something that most of today's trending rap music, does not nurture. This agenda is supported by the productions which feature sample choices that music appreciators of a wide demographic can enjoy. For example, "It Girl" amazingly combines the influence of Big Freedia's bounce, with a popular 90's Blaque sample. The track could easily end up on and taking over the same DJ setlist as those songs pushing negativity, betrayal and materialism. A few of her tracks also feature smooth R&B-styled vocals provided by Mari Gramm, that contribute to the aesthetic of the project. Her "Open Mind" track, features chops of Jill Scott's He Loves Me and $tyles lyrics align by inspiring listeners to explore and cherish their partners' thoughts and ideas, by creating a safe space that encourages vulnerability, because that is a part of what it means to love someone.
On RnBre, Bre $tyle is implementing a new school sound with old school nostalgia through music and lyrics, spreading positivity and authenticity while being the life of the party, that's why she's worthy of the OG Spotlight.
